LEVI
Rolling my neck forward and side to side, I loosen the muscles and get ready for the first play of the game. Today is the official start of our pre-season, and the adrenaline is pumping through me. I wonât be on the field beyond the first series, but Iâm still excited to be out here playing.
Since we won the coin toss and decided to kick the ball off, Iâm standing here, bouncing on the balls of my feet, watching our defense shut down the other teamâs offense. Itâs a quick three and out and the ball is kicked off. Our punt returner, catches the ball at the twenty yard line and barrels forward until heâs taken down after another ten yards.
âDecent field position,â Darren says next to me.
âNot bad at all,â I agree.
We walk out onto the field and line up. Itâs a scorcher out here today. The bright sunlight beats down on my bare arms, and Iâm thankful for the helmet thatâs protecting my head. I may be sweating, but at least my scalp isnât about to catch on fire.
Darren yells out the count, âHut, hut, hut,â and the ball gets snapped to him. He hands it off to me as I run right by him. I blaze a path up the middle of the field, virtually untouched, until Iâm finally taken down after Iâve run fifteen yards.
Flynn extends his hand to help me up and my shoulder screams with pain. Damn, that was painful. I landed a little too roughly on my upper arm, jarring my already sore shoulder.
We head over to huddle up. âGreat run, Levi,â Darren tells me before he fills us in on what play weâre going with next. We part to take our positions, and my shoulder throbs like a steady drumbeat. Fuck. I need to forget about it and focus on doing my job.
Once the ball is snapped, Darren takes three steps back and sends the ball in a smooth spiraling arc right into Flynnâs hands. Heâs instantly tackled, but we still gained another twenty yards. Not only did we get another first down, weâre now well into our opponentâs territory.
Weâre going with another pass, and this time Flynn almost bobbles the catch, but he manages to recover his hold on the pigskin and gain us some more yardage.
âLevi, youâre gonna take it all the way to the end zone.â Darren gives me a confident nod. He looks at each member of our O line one at a time. âMake your blocks so we can start the game with a nice lead.â
The play goes off without a hitch and I run the set route without problem. I barely make it across the white line and into the end zone before Iâm unceremoniously crushed by two of the other teamâs players. Fire burns through my shoulder and I let out a groan. The players climb off me and I roll to my back. Squeezing my eyes shut, I pant through the excruciating pain.
âWhatâs wrong, Levi?â Flynn asks, sounding concerned.
